Health, sanitation & waste management

Safe water, working toilets, waste that is collected and processed, and healthcare that reaches the village — four parts of the same public health problem.

Our health mission

Building healthier communities

How we deliver

We work as the delivery arm of public bodies — as the TWAD Board’s outsourcing agency for water testing, as the agency entrusted with Dindigul City Municipal Corporation’s waste programme, and alongside the health department under the Total Sanitation Campaign.

The strongest part of this sector is water quality. Coodu Trust was selected by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board as its outsourcing agency for water testing, and now staffs and runs 22 laboratories across seven districts of the Thanjavur region, testing 66,000+ samples a year and training villages to test their own water with Field Test Kits.

The second is waste. The trust is entrusted with the Solid Waste Management programme for Dindigul City Municipal Corporation: 400 sanitary workers across 12 divisions collecting and processing 86 tonnes a day, plus a Domestic Breeding Checker team of 110 working house to house against mosquito-borne disease. Under the Total Sanitation Campaign the reports record 10,222 household latrines across 11 districts, and in health, general rural camps have run in the watershed villages since 2003 — 6,253 people in 2004–05 alone — alongside a targeted HIV prevention project that reached 6,512 migrant workers in Karur in 2009–10.
