Understanding

What school infrastructure development means

What is school infrastructure development?

School infrastructure development is the creation and improvement of the physical learning environments essential for quality education — new classrooms, upgraded facilities, libraries and laboratories, clean water and sanitation, and safe, conducive learning spaces.

Most of this work is done under the School Adoption Programme and Village Adoption Programme, funded by ATC Tyres through United Way, Mumbai, and concentrated in Manur block of Tirunelveli district. It began in 2020–21 with two government schools at Gangaikondan and Sankar Nagar — ten classrooms and two toilet complexes — and grew in 2021–22 to seven schools, each with its own list of works: classroom construction, roofing and flooring repairs, toilet complexes and urinals, compound walls, RO water systems, bore wells, kitchen halls, playgrounds, desks, chairs, almirahs, book shelves, sports equipment and desktop computers.

In 2023–24 the Village Adoption Programme built a library and science lab at the Government Primary School, Pallikottai, and a new classroom at the Government Middle School, Mettupirancheri, with toilet renovation and floor tiling for the Anganwadi. Phase III, in 2024–25, moved to Gangaikondasolapuram Government Higher Secondary School — a school of 668 students — where three first-floor classrooms, a staircase, a staff restroom, a stage roof with a public address system and a tile-lined water sump were built.

The trust's school work goes back further than the adoption programmes. Under the Total Sanitation Campaign it built 33 school toilets and 14 Anganwadi toilets in Kuruvikulam block, Tirunelveli, and through the Supreme Industries CSR programme it installed reverse-osmosis drinking water in three primary schools of Kadavur block, Karur, for about 375 children.

Why this work matters

The challenge on the ground — and our answer

The challenge

Classrooms unfit for learning

In underserved communities, students sit in classrooms without proper ventilation, lighting or furniture — environments that hold back learning outcomes.

Our response

Build and upgrade classrooms

Ten classrooms at Gangaikondan and Sankar Nagar in 2020–21, waterproof roofing for three rooms and flooring for six more at Mettupirancheri in 2021–22, and three first-floor rooms at Gangaikondasolapuram in 2024–25.

The challenge

No books, no labs, no practice

Without libraries and laboratories, education stays theory-only — students never get reading materials or hands-on learning in science and technology.

Our response

Libraries and laboratories

A new library and science lab building at the Government Primary School, Pallikottai, stocked with books and learning materials, gives children somewhere to read and something to experiment with.

The challenge

Unsafe water keeps children away

Schools without clean water, toilets and hygiene facilities see more disease and lower attendance.

Our response

Clean water and sanitation on campus

RO drinking water for about 375 children in three primary schools of Kadavur block through Supreme Industries; toilet complexes, urinals and bore wells at the adopted schools; and 33 school toilets built earlier under the Total Sanitation Campaign in Tirunelveli.

The challenge

No computers, and no coaching for the entrance exams

Rural government schools rarely have a working computer, and almost never the coaching that decides whether a bright student reaches engineering or medicine.

Our response

Equipment where it is missing, coaching where it counts

Desktop computers at Gangaikondan, Sankarnagar and Alangaraperi, an LCD projector at Sankarnagar — and JEE/NEET coaching for 20 students at the Government Higher Secondary School, Gangaikondan.

Impact

What school infrastructure development changes

Learning environment

Seven government schools in Manur block were rebuilt and re-equipped under the School Adoption Programme, with a further school taken up in Phase III in 2024–25.

Educational resources

A new library and science lab at the Government Primary School, Pallikottai, stocked with books and learning aids, gives children hands-on science for the first time.

Health & hygiene

Separate toilets for girls, boys and staff, RO drinking water for about 375 children in Kadavur block, and 33 school toilets built earlier in Tirunelveli. The trust's own reports credit the sanitation work with reducing dropout among girls.

Equipment and coaching

Desktop computers and an LCD projector for three of the adopted schools, and JEE/NEET coaching for 20 students at the Government Higher Secondary School, Gangaikondan.
