Understanding

What plantation & afforestation means

What is plantation & afforestation?

Plantation refers to the systematic cultivation of trees on agricultural or non-forested land, while afforestation involves establishing forests on lands that have not been forested in recent history.

Plantation and afforestation are our comprehensive environmental interventions aimed at increasing forest cover, restoring degraded landscapes, and enhancing biodiversity. Since 2000, Coodu Trust has carried out sustainable tree planting under the Tamil Nadu Comprehensive Watershed Programme in Dindigul, Theni, Tirunelveli, Namakkal, Salem and Kanchipuram, and more recently under CSR partnerships in Dindigul and Karur.

Our programs focus on creating sustainable green cover through scientifically planned tree planting initiatives. We emphasize native species selection, community participation, and long-term maintenance to ensure optimal tree survival rates and lasting environmental impact.

Why this work matters

The challenge on the ground — and our answer

The challenge

Degraded land, shrinking green cover

Deforested and degraded landscapes across rural Tamil Nadu lose soil, water and habitat year after year.

Our response

Plant at landscape scale

Systematic plantation drives have put 26,93,250 trees in the ground, across a cumulative 35,000+ hectares in five districts — Dindigul, Namakkal, Salem, Tirunelveli and Kancheepuram.

The challenge

No local supply of quality seedlings

Without nearby nurseries and trained growers, planting drives depend on distant, unreliable seedling stock.

Our response

Build nurseries, train communities

15 ten-day nursery-technology training programmes for 300 rural youth in Karur, Dindigul and Virudhunagar districts, covering seedling raising for forest and horticultural crops and vegetative propagation for fruit, ornamental and flower crops.

The challenge

Saplings planted but not surviving

Tree planting without species matching and after-care leaves saplings to die in the dry months.

Our response

Science from nursery to maturity

Native species selection, optimal spacing, post-plantation care and long-term monitoring keep tree survival rates high.

The challenge

A warming climate needs green cover

Climate change presses hardest on rural communities with the least tree cover to buffer it.

Our response

Partner for climate mitigation

Under a ₹2 crore State Bank of India CSR sanction, 1,20,000 tree saplings were planted across hillocks, barren land and wasteland in Oddanchatram Taluk, Dindigul district, with fencing, watering and maintenance to secure survival.

Impact

What plantation & afforestation changes

Forest cover enhancement

Increased green cover through systematic plantation drives and afforestation initiatives — most recently 1,20,000 saplings on hillocks, barren land and wasteland in Oddanchatram Taluk, Dindigul, with fencing, watering and maintenance to secure survival.

Nursery development

Established sustainable nursery systems and trained 300 rural youth across 15 ten-day programmes in Karur, Dindigul and Virudhunagar in quality seedling production and scientific plantation techniques.

Sustainable forestry

Promoted sustainable forestry practices through bamboo cultivation demonstrations and eco-friendly forest management approaches.

Community capacity

Built local expertise in plantation and nursery management, creating sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship in rural communities.
