Understanding

What water resource management means

What is water resource management?

Water resource management is the comprehensive planning, development, distribution, and optimization of water resources to meet current and future human and environmental needs through systematic water management practices.

Our water resource management programs focus on sustainable water conservation, rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and community-based water management systems. Since 2000, Coodu Trust has worked as coordinating agency, consultant and training partner on water management projects — most recently in Manur Block, Tirunelveli, where the water table rose by 5–10 feet and cultivable area increased by 25–30% after tanks were desilted and recharge shafts built.

We emphasize participatory approaches that involve local communities in water resource planning and management, ensuring long-term sustainability and equitable water distribution while building climate resilience.

Why this work matters

The challenge on the ground — and our answer

The challenge

Silted tanks that store less each year

Village tanks slowly fill with silt, shrinking the water they can hold for the dry months.

Our response

Restore the water bodies

Tank desilting and rehabilitation bring storage back — 18 tanks de-silted in Manur Block, Tirunelveli: seven under the TATA Power programme, seven under Krishna Mines and four more with ATC Tyres.

The challenge

Monsoon rain that runs off unused

Without harvesting structures, seasonal rain drains away instead of recharging the groundwater communities depend on.

Our response

Harvest the rain, recharge the aquifer

Rainwater collection systems, storage solutions and 118 recharge shafts return the rain to the ground where it is needed — 67 with ATC Tyres through United Way, Mumbai, 22 with TATA Power, 21 with Krishna Mines and 8 more under the ATC Tyres climate adaptation project.

The challenge

Irrigation without farmer ownership

When farmers have no role in managing irrigation, water systems are neither maintained nor shared equitably.

Our response

Farmer-led irrigation management

As consultant to the Water Resources Organisation, PWD, Virudhunagar, Coodu Trust built the capacity of Water Users Associations under the Government of Tamil Nadu's World Bank-assisted TN-IAMWARM project — a ₹1,11,30,000 assignment over 30 months from November 2011, reaching 5,644 beneficiaries in participatory irrigation management.

The challenge

Water insecurity in a changing climate

Rural communities face growing pressure on water resources, with supplies that are neither reliable nor equitably shared.

Our response

Sustainable, community-based systems

Participatory planning and sustainable management practices ensure long-term water conservation, equitable distribution and climate resilience.
